    Re: altec model 19....

I was taking a look at my 19 crossovers prior to doing a recap. I noticed that the lugs were already jumpered at the factory. My 19s are circa 1982 with 416-C and 902 drivers. Altec must have upgraded their grounding scheme at the end of their production run.

Here is the Altec19 photo showing the lug location.

And here is a photo of my stock factory crossovers with black jumpers going from the top right post to the post to the left, another jumper going from the top left post to the left post on the bottom terminal strip, and finally a jumper going from the bottom left post to the post at the bottom right.

Cool I guess Altec realized that those lugs could be a problem. And obviously tried to correct this. Thanks for the picture.

    Dear Altec Model 19,

As per your instruction, I want to solder a common wire to all four lugs and then connected the wire to the negative side of the speaker wire. I just want to do it right. I want to ensure that I do it right. Pls adv whether I should solder the common wire to the rivet or lug. You have the picture to show the four lug rivets. Do you have a picture after you solder the common ground. Also, I found my 15" woofer, 416-8b doesn't show too much bass. Do you expect it is due to the grounding issue as well.

Your quick reply will be greatly appreciated.

    Re: altec model 19....

I just put the common wire to all 4 lugs and connect it to the negative side of the speaker wire. I found out the clarity and HF/Mid range has great improvement. However, it doesn't help to improve the bass. Altec Model 19 is using 15" woofer. But you cannot notice any bass from the speaker. I wonder how we can help to improve the bass.

By increaing 3DB at 30 HZ should do the trick. If that does not work , Check to see if your woofers are connected right . They should be pushing. Check with 2.5 volt battery.

I was under the impression that for proper bass the woofers ofcourse have to be in phase wrt each other, but not necessarily in the "pushing" mode only. It can be either way as we are dealing with AC voltage here.

    This is an interesting point.

    Thanks
    Aditya

Thanks for your suggestion. I am using original crossover. How can I improve 3 db in 30Hz. Would appreciate, if you can elaborate a little more.

?? When checking with a DC source to find electrical polarity (+ = a point source's diaphragm moves out), how does AC come into play?

There's the issue of correct horn polarity WRT the woofer though which is affected by both horn/woofer driver offset and XO slope order, so must be factored in along with the horn driver's mechanically reversed layout (diaphragm behind the VC).
